What are you willing to replace?

"I've been meaning to learn SuiteScript, but it's hard to find the time ..."

"We're slammed, and I just don't have the time ..."

"I haven't made the time ..."

All are variations of a theme I hear consistently from people flirting with learning SuiteScript. The same is true when we try to add anything new to our lives. Sadly, you don't get to "make" or "find" time; we all get the same finite amount of it day in and day out. That all probably goes without saying as there are near-infinite, well-worn platitudes about it, but I'll take one from Tolkien anyway:

All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.

When you're young, perhaps you can faff about and go where the wind blows without ever worrying about the opportunity cost, because there probably isn't any. But once you're functioning in the real-world, playing the part of a professional, every single choice and action you make comes at the expense of something else. Your entire life becomes a constant flow of tradeoffs.

If you want to add something new, do something different - say, learn SuiteScript - I'm afraid I have no good news for you. There is no switch you can flip, no pill you can take, no one blog post to rule them all. There's nothing you can do but show up, every day, put in the time, and do the work. With 100% certainty, I can tell you that time you put in will have to be stolen from something else in your life.

All you have to decide is what to replace.

"nothing", by the way, is an acceptable answer, and no one else can tell you otherwise; however, if you don't make a change, don't expect anything else to change. Life's funny that way.
